531,000 visitors generated US$ 490m for the city, according to a report by the city tourist board. The number of Brazilian and North American tourists continues to increase (by 8% and 4%).
Following consecutive interannual increases in visitor numbers through the 12 months of 2017, the year in course continues to bring good news for Buenos Aires City. The first quarter of 2018 saw 531,000 tourists visit the city - 3% up on the same period in 2017. January was the month with the largest increase (8.6%), followed by a slight fall in February (-0.1%) and March (-0.4%).
The visitor numbers included 123,400 visitors from Europe, 99,200 from Brazil, 76,600 from the USA and Canada, 38,900 from Chile, 95,600 from the Rest of America (mainly Peru and Colombia) and 49,900 from Rest of the World (including a significant portion from Australia and China).
Hotel occupancy for the month of March was the highest for the year so far and the highest occupancy rate for March in the last ten years (63,7% - 6 percentage points higher than in March 2017.)
Gonzalo Robredo, president of the Buenos Aires City Tourist Board, said: “Tourism is an industry that generates economic development in all cities, which is why for Buenos Aires it is essential that we position ourselves in the top ten most important destinations in the world. Through promotion and marketing our objedctive is that this global phenomenon also benefits Buenos Aires' residents.
