Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Wednesday laid out the city's roadmap for reopening businesses in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, adding some certain types of stores are allowed to reopen with safety precautions.
The first group of businesses to be reopened included florists, toy stores, music stores, bookstores, clothing and sporting goods stores in the city, but they can only begin offering curbside pickup, and Garcetti noted that the recommendation does not mean these stores must reopen.
"Do what you need to do to make sure you are safe, that you feel secure and that your people are protected as well as your customers," the mayor said at his daily briefing for coronavirus. "While you can open as early as this Friday, you don't have to yet until you feel right."
He also announced that some public spaces in the city that were temporarily shuttered amid the pandemic, including city trails, parks and golf courses, would be reopened since Saturday.
He warned residents in the parks must keep social distance in order to contain the virus spread.
"We want to make sure that as people exercise in those parks and those trails, that people are still as safe as possible and not spreading this coronavirus," he added.
Garcetti said the move is the "Phase 1" designed by the city to exit the lockdown triggered by the fatal disease, and the authority would loose some of the restrictions against the coronavirus slowly.
Moreover, Garcetti extended the city's mask recommendation, saying starting Monday, all passengers on Los Angeles Department of Transportation buses and travelers at LAX international airport will be required to wear face coverings.
