The Whampoa Military Academy, known as Kuomintang Army Officer Academy, was a renowned military academy of China which trained prestigious commanders who fought in the Sino-Japanese war and the Chinese civil war.
Founded by Chinese Kuomingtang Party in Guangzhou in 1924, the military academy was aimed to train army officers who later became the main force for the Northern Expedition, a military campaign led by the Kuomintang (KMT) from 1926 to 1928.
The Academy was later restructured into the Central Military Academy in 1927 and reestablished as the Chinese Military Academy in 1946 and moved to Kaohsiung city of Taiwan province when the KMT moved to Taiwan. Now the old site has been listed as a national historical and cultural site and has open to the public since 1990.
