Located in Xianlie Zhonglu of Guangzhou in China’s Guangdong province, the Huanghuagang Park (Huanghuagang Mausoleum of 72 Martyrs) was built to commemorate the 72 martyrs sacrificed during the uprising of Tongmenghui (the Chinese Revolutionary League) led by Sun Yat-sen in April 1911. The mausoleum now covers a spacious area of 160,000 square meters, "stretching to Erwang Ridge in east, to Guangzhou Model Prison and Yongtai village in west, to Dongsha road (present Xianlie road) in south, and to the field pond behind it in north". Solemn and serene, the mausoleum faces the south with the majestic arch-gate inscribed with "Justice Lasts Forever" by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Through the tomb passage, you will see a martyrs' tomb behind which there is a merit memorial archway.
On April 27, 1911 (March 29 in lunar calendar), the Tongmenghui led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen staged an uprising in Guangzhou against the Qing Dynasty. However, their efforts failed and Yu Peilun and other 85 (more than 100 persons in another version of the story) died in the uprising, among which 29 are overseas Chinese. Pan Dawei, a member of the Tongmenghui, risked his life to collect the remains of the 72 martyrs and buried them in Honghuagang. Later, the name was changed into Huanghuagang. Huanghua in Chinese means chrysanthemum and this kind of flower is the symbol of uprightness The Huanghuagang mausoleum was first built in 1912 and the tomb of martyrs and the merit memorial archway were completed successively by 1921. The words of "Justice Lasts Forever" written by Sun Yat-sen were inscribed on the arch. A 200-meter long tomb passage lies in front of the entrance. The tomb of the martyrs stands on top of a hill among the footstones and the merit memorial archway stands behind the tomb. The green pines and verdant cypresses on both sides of the tomb path set off the solemn and serene air of the park of yellow flowers. The steles standing on the south path have the inscriptions of "Free Spirit", "Spirit Never Dies" and so on, each word weighing heavily. Two 3-meter tall bluestone dragon-engraved pillars stand opposite to each other in the narrow path.
The park covers an area of 16,000 square meters with a large scale of majestic structures. Along the 300-meter long main road orderly stands green pines and verdant cypresses on both sides. The majestic main entrance is a 13-meter tall archway inscribed with "Justice Lasts Forever" written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The park houses a kiosk, a tomb, a merit memorial archway and a monument. The monument is inscribed with the historical cause of the uprising and the names of the martyrs. On top of the monument erects a stone Statue of Liberty replica holding a torch. The tomb of the 72 martyrs is on top of a hill, the merit memorial archway behind the tomb stands a Statue of Liberty and beside the tomb are many pines that had been planted by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Revolutionary martyrs like Pan Dawei, Deng Zhongyuan, Yang Xianyi, Feng Ru and Shi Jianru were also buried here. The park also has a yellow flower well, a yellow flower kiosk, a Mo Pool, a square pool, a octagonal pavilion, a yellow flower park and a tennis service area.
