Victoria, Small but unique

Victoria, the capital of Seychelles, is one of the smallest capital cities in the world and the only major port in the Seychelles, but also the most flourishing area of Mahe Island. Vitoria is small but lovely, and it will take less than half an hour to walk through the city where you can discover surprises every minute. You just can't help falling in love with her and then youwill understand what a unique capital is.

Maybe some would say that Vitoriais not really like a capital city for it is so quiet and peaceful.I’d have to say, Victoria is quite different from those metropolises and has its own unique characteristics. You can hardly find entertainment activities here, even cinemas, because the cinema in Victoria is the only one in the country. It sounds horrible and you would ask what can you do here? Don’t worry, now that you have come to a holiday city and the most important activity is relax and enjoy the sunshine and beach.Enjoy the naturalbeauty and feast on the exquisitecuisine. You can go to the fish market for the fresh seafood and witness the lives of local Seychelles People.

The botanical garden maybe another good choice if you like nature. It was established in 1901 by Queen Victoria. It features a collection of native palms, endemic plant species, a tortoise park, and a short rainforest walk. Already more than 100 years old, the garden is found in the heart of Victoria. Originally, the garden was plantedin order to experiment with growing crop species during the colonial era.Since then, the garden's purpose has since undergone metamorphosis and is a present-day park open to the public. The garden is also home to the Coco De Mer, a world-renowned palm tree and Aldabran Giant Tortoises, one of the Seychelles Archipelago's 115 variant islands.

An array of food and crafts can be found at the market in Victoria. Couples strolling through hand in hand will see fishermen haul their catch to market, stalls offering fragrant spices and citronella, sellers purveying tea and local delicacies and a beautiful collection of local crafts. The local’s fashionably craft items from the ubiquitous island coconut, and also create jewelry and silk paintings by hand.

Two story buildings can be seen almost everywhere in Victoria and the tallest one is not more than 10 floors. Seceded from the British colonial rule in 1975, Victoria has maintained the strong British style architectural elements and its courthouse and post office in the center of town have been virtually unchanged since colonial times.

Small as it is, with a population of 70,000 with 90% of those inhabitants living on the Mahe Island. There are only 173 people per km2. So you will not feel crowed even in the center of the city. So don’t spend your holiday in a normal way when you come to this unique capital. In time, you will finally discover its value.
