Leeds Enter Europe's Top Ten Tourist Spot

There was a time when comedians used to mock that the only positive thing that came out of Leeds was the A65. But the city is having the last giggle after getting nominated as the only place in Britain by Lonely Planet as among the top ten undiscovered, European destinations for visitors worldwide.

The list was created by the Best In Europe 2017 guide. It was assembled to showcase the must-visit sights further than the customary attractions of Prague, Paris and the Lake District respectively.

The West Yorkshire city occupies the fifth place as it has went through a significant urban renewal in the past decade, behind Zagreb in Croatia, Gotland in Sweden, the Galicia region of Spain, and northern Montenegro.

In the past, Leeds was majorly an industrial city constructed on woolen mills and iron foundries. However, in the current scenario, the city is a flourishing, multicultural economic hub next to London in terms of banking and legal services, with Britain's fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth. Starting right from from Geoffrey Boycott to Joe Root, many famous for its cricket stars began their careers at the city's Headingley ground.

The Royal Armouries Museum, which includes a full suit of armour for an elephant, Kirkgate Market, where Marks & Spencer began trading, and Kirkstall Abbey, one of the country's most complete medieval Cistercian abbeys were the other attractions.
