The 35th analysis of German tourism industry shows that nearly two third of the German people went traveling last year, due to the good economic conditions.

Prof. Ulrich Reinhardt, the scientific head at the Foundation for Future Studies supported by British American Tobacco, said at the orientation meeting that booming economy and low rate of unemployment had resulted in the prosperity of German tourism industry in 2018. As a result, about 62% of German people went on a journey last year. Such a situation had never happened before.

Domestic tourism destinations are still most popular among German tourists. According to Statistisches Bundesamt, from January to November last year, 40,480,100,000 visitors stay overnight in Germany, with 82% domestic visitors and 18% overseas visitors. In 2018, the top three long-distance tourism destinations to German tourists are Asia (or Far East), North America and North Africa.

Prof. Reinhardt has seen the possibility of prosperity in cruise tourism and urban tourism industry. Thanks to Elbphilharmonie concert hall, Hamburg has always been an attractive tourism destination, which is always on the map of many travelers. “Elbphilharmonie concert hall is indeed a good choice, and it may stay attractive in the next few years.”

According to Statistisches Bundesamt, from January to November last year, 13,400,000 visitors stay overnight in Hamburg, with 75% domestic visitors (rising 5.1% from a year earlier) and 25% overseas visitors (rising 4.9% from a year earlier), including 5.8% of visitors from China. As a result, China ranks the 18th place among all the tourism markets of Hamburg.

German people travel for 13 days per year on average. According to Reinhardt, traveling is still the most popular way for people to achieve happiness in 2019. About half of the German people are planning to go on holiday in the coming year.
