Tourism in Sweden is on the rise, according to latest statistics published by Statistics Sweden.
This summer, the number of bookings in hotels and hostels increased by 7 percent.
Domestic tourism is driving the boom, as more Swedes choose to holiday at home rather than abroad. This may, in part, due to a growing awareness of the environmental cost of travel.
The Flygskam movement, meaning 'Flight Shame' in Swedish, has gained momentum in the country and has received widespread international attention.
"Clearly, Swedes are affected by the (Flygskam) debate that is underway and more Swedes are convinced to have vacation at home," Jonas Siljhammar, CEO of the trade organisation Visita, told Swedish Television (SVT).
Siljhammar said that Swedish tourism industry had been quick to adapt to the growing demand for sustainable travel options. "More and more people are looking for sustainable, genuine experiences and the Swedish hospitality industry is far ahead."
The increase in tourism has been welcomed as good news for the Swedish hospitality industry and the Swedish economy as a whole. "Overall, it was another fantastic summer for tourism in Sweden. The industry is of great importance for jobs and growth," Siljhammar said.
