Pedro Sánchez has asked parliament in Madrid for a third extension to the state of emergency until 9 May, but some restrictions will be eased ahead of this date, including allowing children to leave the house.
Since lockdown was imposed on 14 March, children were not allowed out for any reason, but under plans announced by the government on Tuesday (21 Apr), those aged 14 and under will now be allowed out for walks from 26 April.
What restrictions have been lifted?
Some non-essential industry workers have now been allowed to return to their jobs, including those who work in manufacturing, construction and some services. However, they must still adhere to strict safety guidelines.
The rest of the population are still being asked to work from home, with schools, bars, restaurants and other services still closed to the public. Shops still remain closed, except for supermarkets, fruit stands, bakeries, butchers, pharmacies and newsstands.
The rules are expected to remain in force into May.
