The Berlin International Film Festival, formerly known as West Berlin International Film Festival, along with Cannes International Film Festival, and Venice International Film Festival is Europe’s three big International Film Festivals; the highest award is "golden bear." Launched by Alfred Bauer in the early 1950’s, it got support and help from the federal republic of Germany government and movie industry. The first event was held at the end of June to early July in 1951 in West Berlin. It is held once a year, the time was originally between June and July, later on, to compete with Cannes international film festival, the time changed to February and March, the duration of which is for two weeks. Its aim is to increase the communication among filmmakers around the world and to promote the improvement of film art.

Berlin film festival has been active for 60 years and it is the treasure land of the Chinese film industry. From 1982, the Chinese animated cartoon "Three Monks,” Zhang Yimou's film "Red Sorghum" in 1988, "Reunion" by Wang Quan 'an in 2010, to "Fireworks in the Day" in 2014, China has already won many prizes.
