For over 300 years, it was always the place for government. In 1980 it was changed to the Malacca Museum. Red House is a Dutch building with heavy hardwood, chains, and stones. It used to be the political institutions of Dutch governors and his party. Now only one room in the house still retains the 17th century wooden ceiling.

Now it is a museum of history, culture and literature in Malacca. It has a collection of Portuguese and Dutch commemorative exhibitions to display Chinese and Malay traditional wedding dress and introduction of Malacca history. The collection also includes the weapons from ancient Holland, the Portuguese clothing since 16th century, Malay wedding dress, gold, silver, jewelry, handicrafts and also many pictures of the port of Malacca and ancient ships. There are rare ancient coins and stamps too.
