The Russian city of Saint Petersburg has illustrated its vast tourism potential during a showcase evening at World Travel Market 2016 in London.

The Tourism Development Committee of St. Petersburg-organised event took place at the Russian Embassy in glamorous west London and was attended by ambassador Alexander Vladimirovich Yakovenko.

Among the invited guests at the event were leading industry professionals from across Europe, as well as journalists, representatives of the consular corps and cultural organisations.

The evening was designed to promote Saint Petersburg as a tourism centre and to strengthen the relations between the city and the UK in the field of tourism.

According to Tourism Committee of St. Petersburg chairman Andrey Mushkarev the past two years has seen the number of tourists from Great Britain reaching the city increased significantly.

“We consider it necessary to hold such events to offer direct contact with the media and to present information to UK tour operators on opportunities in the cultural capital of Russia,” explained Mushkarev.

The Russia Federal Agency for Tourism revealed recently the number of British tourists travelling to Russia has increased by 25 per cent in the past year.

World Travel Awards

Also on the agenda for St. Petersburg is the hosting of the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony 2017.

The event will take place in June next year and is set to welcome hundreds of industry leaders from across the continent to Russia.
