Today, the 17th of September 2017 Mobike has launched the first annual ‘World Cycling Day’ with the theme Cycling Changes Cities.
The world cycling day, championed by Mobike is supported by five other environmentally and socially responsible organisations, UN-Habitat, UNEP(UN Environment Programme), WHO(World Health Organization), WWF(World Wildlife Fund) and WRI(World Resources Institute).
2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the invention of the bicycle. As such, it seemed the perfect time to introduce a world cycling day. Mobike has initiated the global festival as a means to encourage more people to get cycling and impact their surroundings through environmental to societal change.
By accumulating learnings through Big data insights, Mobike is able to support the development of city cycling infrastructure. Showing that the more people we get cycling, it not only improves safety across the board, but also accelerates cities towards becoming ‘Smart Cities’. Cycling truly changes cities
To date, Mobike users have collectively cycled over 5.6 billion kilometres, have saved more than 1.26million tonnes of CO2 emissions and made the equivalent impact as taking 350,000 cars of the road for an entire year.
*Stats based on information from Mobike data team and WWF calculations of Mobike’s first year of operations.
26 International Mobike cities are taking part in the festival this year with each location hosting events and activities inspiring their cities to get cycling.
Mobike Singapore will be holding a cycling event at Marina Bay City Gallery, rewarding each Mobiker with prizes and vouchers from supporting partners, on completing the trail. Mobike UK is leading a tour of their first UK city, Manchester by bike. Mobike Italy are holding an event in the centre of Florence to celebrate the bike and Mobike Japan are taking a tour around Sapporo, spreading the message of #WorldCyclingDay.
Let us know what you will be doing to show that cycling changes cities by using #WorldCyclingDay and/or tagging Mobike in your photos and videos.
