Arusha National Park, located northeast of downtown Arusha and next to Mount Meru, is an important habitat for the endangered silver-cheeked hornbills. With silvery-white casques and black-on-white cheek feathers, these birds are intriguing for their looks alone. Hadada ibis can also be found there, and the splashes of green on their wings are indeed eye-catching.

Lake Manyara, near Arusha National Park, is home to flamingos. These beautiful water birds with pale pink feathers usually stand in the water, and sometimes visitors can see them in an intimate status of head-to-head, which is endearing. The scene of them taking off is even more stunning, like pink fairies soaring over the lake.

Those who don't mind long-distance treks can also visit Ngorongoro Conservation Area located more than 170 kilometers west of the city area. There, visitors can see guineafowls native to Africa and the yellow-billed egrets standing in the water. And don't forget the ostriches that impress most visitors with their amusing demeanor.
