Amsterdam is considering ending ocean cruise visits by 2035.

The Dutch city had previously explored a relocation of its cruise terminal, but the high cost and sustainability concerns have led it to now explore ending cruise calls altogether.

Eliminating ocean cruising would cost Amsterdam 46 million euros in lost revenue over 30 years, according to the city.

"The municipality will further develop the precise consequences of ending sea cruises, including the loss of direct and indirect jobs, in the coming months," a city press release said. "This will be done carefully and in collaboration with the national government and other involved partners."

It noted that Amsterdam is headed toward municipal elections, which are in March, and the next municipal executive will make the ultimate decision on the cruise plan.

The European city had previously been exploring relocating the cruise terminal to Westerhoofd, a neighborhood west of its current location and further from the city center. Doing so would cost €85 million, said Hester van Buren, Amsterdam's deputy mayor.

"We consider this undesirable," she said. "Moreover, we prioritize sustainability and livability. All of this means that we will be better exploring the option of ending sea cruises in Amsterdam."

Amsterdam was also planning to reduce river cruise calls by 10% this year.
