Today Mobike Australia has been announced. The first city will be Gold Coast where Mobike has been awarded the exclusive right to operate smart bikeshare within the city after being selected as the best option for Gold Coast residents in a competitive public bid.
Municipal authorities are welcoming Mobike into the city. Mobike will partner with local organizations; Transit Australia Group (TAG), one of Australia’s largest mass transit companies, and Good Cycles, a local social enterprise.
Mobike Australia
Mobike will bring 2000 newly designed Mobikes created for the Australian market to Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Varsity Lakes by January 2018.
The bikes feature internal three-speed gears, a larger frame and 26-inch wheels to suit local riders, as well as front and rear lights for safety.
...And because it’s Australia, some of the bikes will also be equipped with surfboard racks!
Chris Martin, Vice-President of International for Mobike, said:
“Australia represents an amazing opportunity for Mobike, and Gold Coast is an ideal location for us to start our smart bikeshare service. We are very pleased to be the exclusive partner for the city and delivering our mission to improve city residents’ quality of life by providing an affordable means of shared transportation while reducing congestion and air pollution.
“We’re actively exploring opportunities to launch in additional Australian cities, and we hope that our partnership with City of Gold Coast will give other councils the confidence to work with us to deliver a quality bike share experience to more Australian communities.”
Mobike Gold Coast
Starting in January 2018, by simply downloading the Mobike app, finding a nearby Mobike and scanning its QR code, Gold Coasters will be able to pick up and ride bikes around the city and to the beach.
The 2018 Commonwealth games will be hosted by the city of Gold Coast, at that time Mobike will be available to visitors and athletes; providing a convenient and sustainable method of transport to help fans and competitors make the most of the exciting event.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said:
“We’ve chose a team with both international and local expertise to ensure our city becomes a bikeshare success story. The scheme provides flexibility for users who can park the bike in designated parking areas or in other appropriate locations without the need for parking infrastructure. The bikes will be rolled out strategically and increase availability to meet demand, and we are delighted they will be on the streets in time for Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.”
