Mobike begins its first operations in Spain with a pilot program in Madrid.

The launch in Spain marks a notable milestone in Mobike's international expansion, as the 19th country of operation. The introduction of Mobike in Madrid comes about in support of the city’s urban mobility strategy, calling for increased use of low carbon transportation.

Hunab Moreno, Operations Director, Mobike Spain said:

"We believe the bicycle can create a sustainable, universal, and efficient transport system for cities, and can see tremendous potential for bikesharing in Madrid. The new challenges of mobility and the environment are already being discussed in the city of Madrid, and we believe that Mobike can help encourage the people to cycle rather that drive cars for short journeys."

Initially, Mobike will introduce a small number of bikes to Madrid to both ensure smooth running of bike deployment, distribution and maintenance.

Moving forward, Mobike will look to collaborate closely with city officials to help develop urban mobility solutions for Madrid. As it gains experience in the capital, Mobike will look to extend its service to other cities in the Spanish market.

Hunab added:

"Our priority will be to ensure that we provide a high-quality service to the residents and visitors of Madrid...Overall, we believe Mobike can benefit cities and towns throughout Spain, and we welcome the opportunity to partner with cities and companies to help reduce congestion and tackle levels of pollution."

To ensure positive operations and responsible ridership, a service area will be clearly visible in the Mobike app, showing where users can ride freely, and where they can park responsibly. Parking the bike outside of this area will incur a service fee, charged to the user's account.

Mobike will also launch a reward scheme of EUR 1000 for any member of the public who provides evidence of unauthorized use, vandalism or theft of its bicycles that leads to a conviction of the perpetrators.

In addition to Spain, Mobike is already present in Italy, UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands in Europe. Globally Mobike serves over 200 million registered users in over 200 cities in 19 countries with more than 9 million smart Mobikes.
