City Management Hamburg, in cooperation with NordArt, Levantehaus, Hamburg Tourismus and Europa Passage, is working to present an art exhibition from 3 to 17 July 2022 at the iconic Mönckebergstraße. Twelve oversized ape sculptures, with the height of each reaching 3.5 meters, created by Chinese artist Liu Ruowang, will become the focus in the center of Hamburg during this time.

With the completion of the urban elevated railroad construction and the reopening of the subway station of Mönckebergstraße, City Management Hamburg has introduced this art work into the city center, jointly building a magnificent metropolis of culture with Hamburger Kunsthalle and Bucerius Kunst Forum.

The sculptures, in combination with the exhibition "The Mystery of Banksy - A Genius Mind" which is displaying works by the mysterious graffiti artist in the old Galeria Kaufhof until 3 October, complement the art offerings in the city center. The visit to the sculptures is not only worthwhile for those interested in culture but also impressive to anyone standing before the 3.5-meter-high ape sculptures and faltering over one's own perspective and view of social progress. The imposing artwork by Liu has caused a sensation and sparked social discussions.

Liu Ruowang is perceived as one of China's most important contemporary artists. Looking up to the sky, the large apes warn against the increasing destruction of nature by the achievements of civilization. "The stunned eyes and innocent faces of these humanoid apes reveal the desire to correct everything and move towards a bright future," says Liu. The sculptures chosen for Mönckebergstraße symbolize for the initiators the necessary cohesion of the society, which inspires people to look in all directions and think from different perspectives.

In addition, "Mr. Pinocchio", another set of large sculptures created by Liu has arrived safely in Hamburg earlier on 31 May, and transferred to Germany's NordArt where it debuted with Liu's other two works named "The East is Red" and "Dodo Bird" at NordArt 2022, an international art exhibition.
