Arusha: A Trip to an Equatorial Volcano

Arusha is located in the northwest of Tanzania and close to the Equator. In July, the soothing weather here provides mountaineers from all over the world wonderful chances to climb the Mount Meru nearby.

Mount Meru is situated in Arusha National Park. With an altitude of 4562.13 meters, it is an active volcano that has been silent for more than a century. Due to its geographical features similar to the nearby Mount Kilimanjaro and a relatively low altitude, it has become a "training ground" for mountaineers who aim to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. At the foot of the mountain, with an altitude of 1580 meters, stands a giant arch-like fig tree. From here, you can start a mountaineering journey in the woods.

On your way up to the peak, you will find Maio Falls - not that spectacular but beautifully embellished with silky water. Continue walking to reach Kitoto Viewpoint, which is over 2,500 meters above sea level. From here, you can overlook the surrounding forests and grasslands. If you have a pair of binoculars, you may even see some wandering giraffes. Walk along the winding mountain road, ascend beyond the clouds, and you will reach the highest peak of Mount Meru. Here, clouds seem to be touchable with your fingertips, and you can overlook the spectacular Ash Cone.

The Saddle Hut at 3,500 meters above sea level provides rest facilities, where every mountaineer can have a rest prior to the continued trek to the highest peak. Keep in mind that mountain-climbing can never be done overnight. If there is an opportunity to rest, don't miss it.
