Skygarden Permanent installation
Creator: James Turrell 2007
Address:90 Seventh Street, Central Market (opposite Mission Street)
"Skygarden" was created by James Turrell in 2007. He used neon lights as the only material to create a "Skygarden" in a three-story opening on the south facade of the San Francisco Federal Building designed by Morphosis Architects. After dusk and sunset, Turrell's work saturating the space with colored lights. From the outside, the Skygarden has created a bright and strange lighthouse with countless highlights. The three-story gap becomes a luminous color block embedded in the building; it also has two neon extension strips, one extending diagonally from the balcony to the building facade along a gap, and the other light band embedded in the height of the building facing the street forms a geometric figure starting from the height of the building's facade.
Skygarden is lit from dusk to 10 pm and can be viewed from the outside. During the day, you can enjoy the sky and surrounding city views from the terrace and two overhanging walkways. A visit to the San Francisco Federal Building requires a passport or US ID. Skygarden can be reached by the elevator to the 12th floor; it is open from 9 am to 3 pm from Monday to Friday, and it is convenient for self-guided tours.
Best place to watch: At night, stand on the south side of Mission St and watch the color change. Enter the courtyard below the Skygarden, you can see the light strip facing the street running closer on the facade.
Continue north to Market St., then turn left. Follow Market St. west, then right onto Hayes St. and then right onto Polk St.
