Originally built as a fortification on six small islands on the waters south of Helsinki, Suomenlinna served as a fortress against Russians during the Swedish reign of Finland, and later as a Russian military installation against other European maritime powers. Serving as an example of European military architecture, in 1991, the fortress was included in the World Heritage List by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Suomenlinna encompasses several museums that tell the story of its past as a military fortress, as well as the military history of Finland. Suomenlinna Museum showcases the tools and ammunition used there over the past 270 years, with a digital display installed to share more details for visitors. As part of the fortress commandants' residence during Swedish rule, Ehrensvärd Museum displays the art collection and furniture of 18th-century Swedish officers. Visitors can also get a glimpse into the life of Finland's post-independence navy in the restored Vesikko submarine.
