Museum Retreat in Sanya: A Cultural Voyage Through Nanhai Civilization

From May 17 to August 31, Sanya invites visitors to embark on a unique museum retreat with the free public event “Joining Hands Across the Sea: The Epic of Nanhai Civilization’s Boats and Oars.” This large-scale cultural initiative highlights a groundbreaking collaboration among five cultural venues, featuring the debut of underwater ceramics from the Sanya Museum’s collection.

As a key node on the ancient Maritime Silk Road and a gateway to the Hainan Free Trade Port, Sanya offers a thematic exhibition that systematically traces the development of Nanhai civilization. Rare treasures—such as Song dynasty celadon bowls, Yuan blue-white porcelain powder boxes, and Ming blue-and-white bowls—are on display for the first time, revealing the splendor of maritime trade and cultural integration. To engage the public creatively, museums have extended their hours until 9 p.m. for a unique night-visit experience. Visitors can try intangible cultural heritage crafts, immerse themselves in Tanka fishing culture, join marine conservation workshops, or collect themed souvenirs through fun interactive games.

Beyond the main exhibition, the “Southwind Sail” creative market brings together cultural crafts, while live music, dance performances, and expert lectures enrich the atmosphere. Sanya’s museums—including the Shanhaibei Shell Culture Museum (with over 5,000 shell artifacts, featuring the “First Chinese Dragon” shell mosaic and a giant clam totem), the Sanya Natural Museum (home to the complete “Sanya Pterosaur” fossil), and the Dinosaur Museum (with hands-on fossil digging)—offer a journey from ancient fossils to maritime heritage.
