There is no one in Hamburg who does not know about Hohenbuchenpark. Originally the private property of a local confectioner in the 18th century, this 11-hectare-large beech forest park is now a popular leisure destination for locals and tourists alike. You can cycle through the beautiful oaks, hornbeams and ash trees, and on a clear day, you can boat on the Alster River. The vast meadows also create conditions for sunbathing.

The lesser-known Eppendorfer Moor is the most extensive marsh in Central Europe, and its low level of development makes it a popular place to see wild birds, including kingfishers, pademelons and green woodpeckers. There are also hundreds of butterfly species waiting to be discovered by visitors.

There's no shortage of "oases" in downtown Hamburg. The vast lawns of Planten un Blomen provide a great place for picnics and relaxation, and the rose garden is a must-see in summer.
