Carnival Corporation signs a three-year agreement with Conservation International to restore mangroves, support coastal ecosystems and fund nature-based businesses across key Caribbean cruise destinations.

MIAMI – Carnival Corporation & plc has announced a three-year partnership with Conservation International, aimed at restoring mangrove forests and supporting nature-based economic activity across the Caribbean.

The agreement brings together the world’s largest cruise company and a global environmental organisation to focus on the protection of coastal ecosystems that play a critical role in climate resilience, biodiversity preservation and local livelihoods. Mangrove forests, which help buffer shorelines from storms, absorb carbon and sustain marine ecosystems, are central to the initiative.

Funding for the programme will be provided by Carnival Corporation as well as through onboard guest engagement initiatives across its cruise brands. These include Holland America Line’s “On Deck for a Cause” 5K walks, where guests can participate in fundraising activities during non-Alaska voyages, and the “Keep the Change” programme, which allows guests to donate a portion of casino winnings to support conservation efforts. Additional initiatives are expected to be introduced across the company’s portfolio.

“The Caribbean’s warm and welcoming spirit is matched only by the breathtaking beauty of its natural environment, reminding us of our shared responsibility to safeguard these ecosystems for those who come after us,” said Josh Weinstein, CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc. “Working with Conservation International gives us a meaningful way to partner with communities in biodiverse coastal destinations. Together, we’re supporting local innovation and social impact while helping care for the natural wonders that make these destinations so beloved.”

The partnership focuses on several key areas, including the restoration and protection of coastal wetlands in the Caribbean. These ecosystems provide habitat for marine species and migratory birds, while also offering natural protection against extreme weather events. Activities will include supporting natural mangrove regeneration, strengthening research and monitoring, and enhancing community engagement to ensure long-term sustainability.

In parallel, the initiative will support small and micro-enterprises that depend on natural resources, including ecotourism operators, fishers and local artisans. Through collaboration with regional partners, Conservation International will provide technical assistance, training, mentoring and access to small grants to support the adoption of sustainable business practices.

The collaboration aligns with Carnival Corporation’s broader sustainability strategy and contributes to its 2030 goals, which include reducing fuel consumption and emissions, and expanding circular economy practices through the reduction, reuse and recycling of materials. The company also continues to engage with local communities across its global destinations.

Conservation International works globally to protect natural ecosystems through scientific research, policy development and on-the-ground programmes, in partnership with governments, communities and industry stakeholders.

“Healthy mangroves mean safer communities, stronger economies and more resilient Caribbean coastlines,” said Kelvin Alie, Acting Head of Conservation Programs and Senior Vice President at Conservation International. “Together with Carnival Corporation, we are helping to restore these critical ecosystems so they can deliver lasting benefits for both people and nature.”
